May Day

An ancient Sussex tradition kept alive each year. Crowning of the May Queen.

May Day celebrations in England date back to the 14th century, taking place on the first bank holiday in May the village May Queen accompanied by her attendants ride on a decorated vehicle through the village to the Maypole. Complicated dances take place around the maypole, spring flowers and ribbons adorn the show. You may even here the sound of Morris dancers in the air, children's races and cream teas follow.
